Two organisations which focus on gender equality in the aquaculture industry have launched a new initiative. SAGE, Seafood and Gender Equality, was founded in 2020 as a non-profit organization headquartered in Portland, Oregon, U.S.A. The goal of the organisation is to raise awareness of gender inequities and to improve gender equality in the seafood sector. WSI, Women in the Seafood Industry, is also a non-profit association created by seafood professionals and gender specialists. It emerged from the growing recognition that women’s participation in the global seafood industry is very significant, yet it is often undervalued by private stakeholders and overlooked by public policies.
Both organisations joined forces to create a new dialogue during the GOAL conference that took place in Seattle last week (Oct 4-6). The two organisations led leaders in the seafood industry through a series of virtual meetings during the conference. However, the actual Gender Equality Dialogue is scheduled to start in mid-2023 and is co-funded by the Builders Initiative, the David and Lucile Packard Foundation and the Walton Family Foundation. Additional information can be found on the website of WSI and SAGE.
